Types Of Pronouns

Similar to nouns, pronouns can be singular or plural, and they can either be the subject or the object too. Let us look into the different types of pronouns.

Pronouns Worksheets for 10 Grade

Determinant

A determiner is a word that introduces a noun or gives information about a noun. There are different types of determinants:

  • I. Material
  • ii. Possessives
  • iii. indicative
  • iv. Distribution
  • V. Quantifier.

Articles

Articles are determiners that indicate whether a noun is specific/definite (using a) or general/indefinite (using a/a). Although in theory this sounds simple, in practice it can be a bit more difficult due to some confusing rules to follow.

Rule:

Pronoun Worksheet for Class 9

uncertain/unspecific

  1. The indefinite article is used before a singular countable noun when it is mentioned for the first time. As. I bought a new computer.
  2. Use the indefinite articles a and an when expressing ‘quantities’ or ‘definite numbers’. As. I gave him a lot of work.
  3. Use the indefinite clauses a and an before a proper noun to identify an unknown person or to express a particular meaning. As. In the morning one Rahul called me.
  4. Use the indefinite articles a and an before a noun in an exclamation. As. What a beautiful place!
  5. The sound of the first letter of a word determines whether “a” or “n” is used. If the word begins with a vowel sound, use “a”. If it starts with a consonant sound, use “a”. Pay attention to the sounds, not just the starting letter. As. A horse can do the work of many men in an hour.
  6. The indefinite articles a and an are singular, meaning they can be used with singular countable nouns.

definite/specific

  1. To refer to something that has already been mentioned, we use the definite article “the”. As. I met a lady yesterday. The woman is a foreigner.
  2. When both the speaker and the hearer understand what is being referred to, even if it was not mentioned before, we use the definite article “the”. As. I have seen the video you sent.
  3. In sentences or clauses where we define or identify a specific person or thing, we use the definite article “the”. As. The person who wrote the book is no more.
  4. To refer to items that are unique, we use the definite article “the”. As. Sun.
  5. Before superlatives and ordinal numbers, we use the definite article “the”. As. He is the best player of the team. / He came on the first day of the month.
  6. When referring to a larger group of people, nationalities, or races, we use the definite article “the”. As. Indian. / Mongoloids.
  7. With decades or groups of years, we use the definite article “the.” As. The 90s were a difficult time.
  8. The definite article “the” is used for both singular and plural countable nouns. It is also suitable for some uncountable nouns.
  9. “The” is generally not used before proper or abstract nouns unless it is necessary to identify those nouns in a specific context.
  10. “The” is not used before plural countable nouns when they are referred to in general. As. Today’s kids are really smart.

Possessive

Possessive determiners are used to show who owns or “has possession” of something. Possessive determiners are as follows: my, yours, his, hers, hers, ours and theirs.

Rule:

  • Use “my/our” for first person singular/plural. As. I am a student and studies are my priority.
  • Use “your” for the second person. As. where are you Your parcel has arrived.
  • Use “his” for the muscles of the third person singular. As. He needs to come here. I have his books.
  • Use “her” for the singular third person feminine. As. She is a brilliant student. I like his ambitions.
  • Use “their” for the third person plural. As. The birds are here. I can hear their voices.
  • Use “its” for singular inanimate, animal, bird, insect, child. As. The dog knows its owner.

Demonstrative

Demonstratives show where things are located and how many of them are there. This, that, these, and those are demonstrative.

Rules:

  • ‘This’ and ‘that’ are used before singular nouns.
  • ‘These’ and ‘those’ are used before plural nouns.
  • ‘This’ refers to something close to us, while ‘that’ refers to something far away.
  • ‘These’ refer to things close to us, while ‘those’ refer to things far away.

Distributives

When we talk about a particular person or thing out of a group of persons and things, we use distributive like ‘every’, ‘every’ etc.

  • When we think of people or things separately, we use ‘each,’ and when we mean everybody together in a group, we use ‘every’. eg. Each apple in the basket has been wrapped. / Every person in this room has read this book.
  • When two persons or things are referred to together, we can use ‘both’. eg. I have met both the brothers.
  • When we point to only one out of the two, we can use ‘either’ but when we want to refer to none out of the two, we use ‘neither’. eg. Either her or his friend did this. / Neither of them came to the party.
  • ‘All’ describes the complete group to mean that nothing has been left out. eg. All of them were present.
  • ‘Half’ is used to talk about a whole group divided into two. eg. Half of the class was present.

Quantifiers

Quantifiers are used when we want to indicate the number of a noun or the amount of a noun.

Rules:

  • Only countable nouns are used with the quantifiers ‘few’ and ‘many’.
  • ‘Many’ indicates the majority of the countable noun, whereas ‘few’ indicates the minority of the countable noun. eg. Many were invited. / Only a few people came.
  • Quantifiers like ‘little’ and ‘much’ are used only with uncountable nouns.
  • ‘Little’ indicates small amount of uncountable noun, while ‘much’ indicates a large amount. eg. I need some milk. / I have much respect for him.
  • There are some quantifiers which can be used with both countable and uncountable nouns. They are ‘some’, ‘any’, ‘enough’, ‘most’, ‘no’, and ‘all’.

Subject-Pronoun agreement

A sentence’s parts must be in agreement. If the subject is singular, then the verb and any pronouns referring to it should also be singular; If the subject is plural, the verb and any pronouns referring to it must be plural.

Rules:

  • In both the singular and plural forms, ‘you’ is used for the second person.
  • ‘They’ can be used to refer to a group of third-person pronouns.
  • When two or more singular subjects combine, a compound subject is formed, and a plural verb is used. eg. You and I are not yet old enough to vote.
  • ‘It’ can be applied to a baby whose gender is unknown, as well as an animal or plant.

Reflexive Pronouns

Words like myself, myself, himself, herself, ourselves, yourselves, and themselves are reflexive pronouns. They’re referring to someone or something. A reflexive pronoun is one that is used in place of the object when the subject and object of a verb are the same person.

Finite and Non-Finite verbs

Finite and non-finite verbs are the two types of verbs.

Finite verbs are those that change their form depending on the subject. They denote time (tense) and are limited by the subject’s number, person, and gender. In some cases, a finite verb is the only main verb in a sentence.

  • eg. I gave her a book. [Here, reading the verb ‘gave’ gives us the idea that the tense of the sentence is past. So, it’s a finite verb.]

Person, number and tense are not shown in nonfinite verbs. They don’t say anything about the subject’s actions.

  • eg. I wanted to give her a book. [Here, although the sentence is past, we’ve used ‘to give’. ‘Give’ here doesn’t tell us anything about tense. However, ‘wanted’ indicates the sentence is in past tense. So, ‘wanted’ is a finite verb and ‘to give’ is a non-finite verb.

1. Defining or identifying clauses.

If we remove the relative clause, the meaning of the sentence changes drastically.

Like the lady who met me in the hospital was very kind.
The lady was very kind. (Removing the relevant clause significantly changes the context.)

2. Non-defining or non-essential clauses

If we remove the relative clause, some detail is lost, but the overall meaning does not change. The three examples given above are of non-defining clauses.

A non-defining relative clause usually has a comma or dash (-) in front of it and a comma or dash after it. If the relative clause comes at the end, we put a full stop.
