Class 4 English Grammar Chapter 1 The Sentence

1. The Sentence

As we know that sentence is a group of words arranged in a specific order which produces a complete meaning or meaning. Here we will learn how to make sentences using the given words. We will also know what is a correct sentence or what are the ways to purify a sentence. Examples related to the improvement of sentences are given for practice. To learn more about sentences, do the exercises in Chapter 1 of the Grade 4 grammar book.

Motive

To learn the word order in a sentence.

Read the following groups of words:

  1. Is Supriya a good girl?
  2. His name is Mayank.
  3. I am ten years old
  4. I go to school everyday

Do these groups of words have any meaning? No, they don’t. Therefore they are not sentences.

Now read those same groups of words:

  1. Supriya is a good girl.
  2. His name is Mayank.
  3. I am ten years old.
  4. I go to school every day.

Does the above group of words have any meaning? yes they do. So they are sentences. So, we see that when words are placed in a specific order they create meaning and form what we call sentences.

Types of sentences:

  1. Statement or Assertive Sentence (I am writing a letter.)
  2. {Note: It is always followed by a period (.)}
  3. command or imperative sentence (Please help me.)
  4. question or interrogative sentence (are you going to school?)
  5. Alternative Sentences (May you live long!)
  6. (Note: Each alternative sentence ends with an exclamation mark (!).
  7. interjection or exclamatory sentence (Hello! What are you doing there?)

(Note: An exclamation mark (!) is used at the end of a sentence.)
