Verbs in English Grammar for Class 4

Definition: A verb is a word that showcases the occurrence of a particular task or conveys a state of being.

We will understand verbs with the help of an example:-

  • Ms.Sharma is teaching the class in the morning.
  • What does Ms.Sharma do in the morning? She teaches the class in the morning. The action that she is doing is “teaching“ the class. So, the action that is denoted to her is “teaching”. Hence, the verb that is here is “teaching”.

Let us understand another example:-

  • Suman writes a letter to her aunt who is living in the US.

The verb that is used here is “writes”. Because it is denoting an action.

Types Of Verbs For Class 4

1. Transitive verbs

A kind of verb that needs an object to follow the verb through is called a transitive verb.

Examples:

  1. The teacher was teaching science today. (the object is “maths”)
  2. Sweetie is watering the plants. (the object is “plants”)
  3. I am writing my notes with a pen. (the object is “pen”)
  4. He is playing video games on television. (the object is “television”)
  5. She was singing a song at the concert. (the object is “concert”)
  6. Mahak is listening to songs. (the object is “songs”)
  7. Pallavi cooks tasty food. (the object is “food”)
  8. Ram will be having dinner with his friends. (the object is “dinner”)
  9. We are going to a village to spend the vacation. (the object is “concert”)

2. Intransitive Verbs

Unlike a transitive verb, an Intransitive verb does not take an object.

Examples:

  2. We were laughing together.
  3. She was walking.
  4. He is reading.

3. Auxiliary Verbs

4. Modals Verbs

  3. She can go to the office.
  4. He ought to follow the rules.

Meaning:

The verb is the word that helps to identify a subject in a particular sentence. Mainly there are two types of verbs:

Three forms of the verb:

There are three forms of verbs. These are:

Use of verbs in the sentences:

The verb makes the meaning of the sentence complete. And also helps in knowing the subject. Some common examples of verbs in the sentences are:
